Any alternative to hair gel or a better product?

whenever i go out i have to put gel in my hair because it is so thick and it tends to stand up and look bad. the only way to keep it down is with gel. the thing i hate about gel is that it always makes my face all greasy and stuff....any suggestions?Any alternative to hair gel or a better product?
