Does Axe hair gel ruin your hair? what can i use instead of gel to get a messy scruffy look?

i use Axe hair gel - Shaggy Look, for my hair, will it ruin my hair? im trying to get that messy scruffy look, my hair is medium length, it goes to about the bottom of my ears. What can i do to achieve this look?Does Axe hair gel ruin your hair? what can i use instead of gel to get a messy scruffy look?
hair gel wont ruin your hair but for that look gel might not be the best thing to use, id go with a palmade or a wax on your hair.
